"Sit Sill Look Pretty" - Daya
Updated: Jul 27, 2018
This is one of my favourite songs at the moment. It came out March 2016, but for me it’s an instant classic.
The main theme of the song promotes feminism and that women are not made wives to just “sit still” and “look pretty”. One line goes “this queen don’t need a king” which sums up my whole outlook on relationships. We are strong independent people who don’t need someone to treat them as a trophy, however, when together, should feel like they can rule the world and can take on anything.
My absolute favourite part of the song a phrase that goes:
That Snow White,
She did it right,
In her life,
Had 7 men to do the chores,
‘Cause that’s not what a lady’s for.
This makes me laugh every time as it switches up the story a little and does a little role reversal. It takes this classic story and updates it.
Daya says that she wants to be her own person and go after her own dreams, goals and ambitions, and is fed up of people telling her to be someone she isn’t and act like someone she wouldn’t like. In male dominated world we need people, even men, to stand up not in an aggressive way but in an effective and subtle way that just reminds people that we are all equals.
