Craving Croatia - Shocking Windsurfing Experience!

Updated: Jul 26, 2018

After that sudden burst of hot weather, we’re now back to the cold Rainey England that I’ve grown to love, but it makes me wish for hotter weather. I miss feeling the sun on my skin and I want my summer tan back! This all made me think of previous holidays and one that stands out is my family holiday to Croatia.

A couple of years ago I went to Croatia with my family and it was so much fun, filled with tanning, wind surfing and sightseeing. The tanning part is pretty self explanatory as we were based in a hotel apartment right by a beach in Split, we spent a day in Dubrovnik seeing all the historical parts of the great city, but the windsurfing was defiantly an experience in itself.

I went for a 2 hour lesson with two other guys and the first hour was good; I learnt how to ride the wind (not sure if that is the right term) and turn against and towards the wind; it was great. However, and there’s always a however, I hadn’t noticed how far away from the beach I had gotten and neither had my parents. One minute my mum looked up and I was about 25 meters away the next I was a dot on the horizon, and that is not and exaggeration!

When we were that far out the wind was so strong and as I was only about 10, I couldn’t pull the sail up, so the instructor came up to me, took my sail and attached it to his, and told me to paddle back to shore. I don’t think he realised how far away we were coz he did a double take and then suddenly windsurfed over to the other guys along with my sail. Eventually I managed to paddle back, after about a good 10 mins of constant paddling, and I think my parent then swore to never let me out of their sight again.

I had so much fun on this holiday and I miss it so much but needless to say I’ve not been windsurfing since as I think this experience has put me off a little.
